Introduction

Professional development (PD) is a critical component in advancing pharmacy careers, both for young pharmacists and established pharmacists. Regardless of where a pharmacist is in his or her career, there will always be the need for PD, particularly as there is constant evolution within the healthcare workforce and the emerging needs of the patients and the public. Unfortunately, it is not always obvious what PD activities one should pursue to meet pharmacy workforce needs, or how PD can be used to help career advancement. This session aims to provide the following:

  • Examples of how young pharmacists and established pharmacists have used professional development to advance their pharmacy careers;
  • Information for the audience to self-assess which PD activities will benefit them to develop their own careers and allow for transformative growth and capability;
  • Team-based learning activities on some of the modern tools for professional development, including social media outlets such as LinkedIn and Twitter.

This session will be a mix of presentations and participant engagement activities.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe PD tools young pharmacists and established career pharmacists have used to advance their pharmacy career;
  2. Identify avenues for professional development that will best assist them in reaching their long-term career goals;
  3. Outline basic concepts to develop PD tools for career advancement.
